The possibilities in neighborhoods – Utilizing accessory apartments in existing homes to address social, environmental, and economic issues

Society has changed radically since the construction of many of the homes within American communities, which has resulted in these structures becoming increasingly incapable of meeting the demands created by, and exacerbating the problems of, contemporary life. This study focuses on housing within Sacramento, California, which similar to of many cities within the country has a large infrastructure of bungalow and ranch style homes. The specific social, economic and environmental changes that have occurred within the city since the construction of these homes and the resulting issues and unmet needs of homeowners are examined. From this information co-residency is explored as a solution for addressing those needs. Finally, examples of the home design revisions necessary to support these patterns of living are illustrated for the bungalow and ranch typologies common within Sacramento.
